Iraqi Prime Minister Announces Victory Over ISIS in His Country

On Saturday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced a victory over ISIS in Iraq.
“Our forces are in complete control of the Iraqi-Syrian border and I, therefore, announce the end of the war against Daesh,” The Daily Mail reported he told a conference in Baghdad.
Al-Abadi tweeted that Iraq’s “heroic armed forces” secured the entirety of the nation’s border along Iraq and declared, “Long live Iraq and its people.” The prime minister added in a subsequent tweet that despite the enemy’s desire to “kill our civilization,” victory was achieved “through our unity and our determination.”
“The United Nations can accomplish the impossible if united,” his tweet continued, “and success is achieved by respecting the differences between us and achieving the motto of ‘me and the other’ to achieve the Renaissance.”
The victory was also confirmed by Operation Inherent Resolve, the United States-led coalition:
Al-Abadi’s announcement came about five months after he claimed victory in ISIS’s stronghold of Mosul and in November, Iraqi forces captured Rawa near the Syrian border, which was the last town under ISIS’s control, according to Reuters.
